Compiling DCMTK 3.6.2 on Fedora 25: invalid conversion

#1 Post by sylvainadam »

Dear all,

I'm trying to compile DCMTK 3.6.2 on Fedora Server 25, as part of the Orthanc Server latest release (http://www.orthanc-server.com).

I came across the following error during compilation:

Code: Select all

This looks strange, the code seems to add zero to the pointer returned from the new statement, meaning this is a pointer offset operation and no conversion should be necessary. Two explanations come to my mind regarding that:
1. Your compiler does not understand C++, what compiler are you using? (looks like GCC though, which SHOULD work)
2. The macro DCMTK_LOG4CPLUS_TRHEADED does something crazy, i'll have a look at it.

Please note that oflog is not really code written by us but is instead based on log4cplus, so, we perhaps don't know that much more about it than you do.

EDIT:
DCMTK_LOG4CPLUS_THREADED is defined as

Code: Select all

#  define DCMTK_LOG4CPLUS_THREADED(x) (x)
so this should not cause the problem...

Thank you Jan.

I'm using cmake then make without changing any basic configuration, I'm guessing it's GCC by default, correct?

GCC version: 6.3.1 20161221 (Red Hat 6.3.1-1).

Is there anything else I could do?

Just for your information, the former version of DCMTK compiles without any issue.

Thanks,

Sylvain

You could test to simply remove the "+0" and see whether that gives us any better error output (or just works).

DCMTK 3.6.2 uses a newer version of log4cplus than 3.6.0, so this perhaps explains it, still seems strange to me though.

EDIT: In case you don't enable multi threading, DCMTK_LOG4CPLUS_THREADED becomes defined as nothing, which would explain the problem. I have no idea how that could happen though, you did not disable multi threading, right?

Thank you Jan.

I've just tried with removing '+ 0' where the compilation failed, and it works now  !

Thanks for that tip.

I'm not sure about whether multi threading is enabled. I did not disable multi-threading. Would you know how I could check this? The cmake command takes instructions from Orthanc's files directly.

The relevant option should be

Code: Select all

OPTION(DCMTK_WITH_THREADS "Configure DCMTK with support for multi-threading." ON)
as you see it defaults to ON.
You could check whether WITH_THREADS is #defined in the generated dcmtk/config/osconfig.h

Hello Jan,

Just realized that the file ./config/include/dcmtk/config/osconfig.h doesn't have WITH_THREADS defined it seems.

Does that configuration comes from the cmake from the original application I'm compiling?

Re: Compiling DCMTK 3.6.2 on Fedora 25: invalid conversion

#8 Post by Jan Schlamelcher »

The file is generated by CMake while running it before compiling DCMTK. So it seems that our scripts don't understand how multi threading works on Fedora 25 (which seems strange, since it is a rather normal Linux distribution, however, we currently do not test it in our nightly builds - maybe we should).
